Tips for Housetraining Your Puppy

Housetraining a new puppy will probably not be the easiest thing you’ve ever done—with some patience, consistency, and the right techniques, though, you can make it go as quickly and smoothly as possible. Try these tips from your Ludington veterinary professional.

Use the Same Bathroom Spot

It’s extremely important to use the same spot outside every time you take your puppy to the bathroom. Don’t confuse your pup by allowing her to eliminate anywhere in the yard. Designate an area—you can even mark it off with some shrubbery and lay down soft mulch to make it more appealing—and lead your dog there every time you take her out. Consult your Ludington veterinarian for more on a good outdoor bathroom spot for your pet.

Establish a Schedule

It’s best to have your puppy eat, play, and go to the bathroom all on a regular schedule. This will teach her that there are certain times to go to the bathroom, and she can wait until that time comes. Set up regular feeding times, then take your dog outside shortly after she’s done eating and drinking. After several rotations of this your dog will get the idea that bathroom time comes shortly after eating time. Ask your Ludington veterinarian for more advice on scheduling your puppy’s daily routine.

Use Rewards

Every time your puppy eliminates successfully in the right spot and at the right time, reward her. This may mean giving her a treat or taking her on a walk around the neighborhood. Be sure to administer the reward right after your puppy is completely done her business—if you wait until she’s back in the house, she may get the wrong impression that coming back inside warrants rewards, which isn’t what you’re trying to convey at all.

Have a conversation with your Ludington veterinarian to get more tips on housetraining your puppy. If your dog is particularly stubborn and you can’t seem to get her going to the bathroom regularly or she keeps eliminating inside the house, you may need to seek the help of a professional animal trainer or behaviorist. Your Ludington vet can offer a recommendation.
